UU Congregations Support Proposed Mosque
infor@sewuu.org
May 2, 2012

Milwaukee – SEWWUC, comprised of the nine Southeastern Wisconsin Unitarian Universalist Congregations, wholeheartedly offers its support for the Islamic Society of Milwaukee’s desire to build a mosque in Brookfield. We are an organization that locally, nationally, and globally supports the inherent right to worship in a free and responsible way. Our own history has been replete with attempts to prevent us from religious practice or from joining with a community’s interfaith voice. For this reason, we are especially sensitive to circumstances where intolerance appears to be the underlying factor for those motivated to resist the building of a spiritual home.

It is in this spirit that we express our combined support for the building of a mosque in Brookfield.

Choralfest a Huge Success
On February 18 six SEWUUC choirs combined in an afternoon concert called ChoralFest. Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church in Racine hosted with the nearby, larger, First Presbyterian church being used for the concert itself. The concert featured songs sung by each participating choir and concluded in a beautiful, massed presentation. The choirs celebrated the Earth, and Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Islamic religions.
Presentation of the Unsung UU Award
The Unsung UU Award was presented to John Schmidt of the Olympia Brown church for his years of selfless service to his congregation and the wider denomination. A framed certificate was presented to a very surprised John by Lois Wesener, SEWUUC Chairperson. A lovely reception was held at the Olympia Brown Church after the concert. SEWUUC thanks everyone who helped make this a successful and lovely event..
